2023 A Year of Historical Firsts for Women
International Women’s Day is fast approaching on Friday 08 March 2024, we thought we’d look back on 2023 and remind ourselves of the historical women who broke records and made history in positions which historically have been male driven.

Christina Koch
Christina is due to be the first women to go to the moon. Christina already holds the record for the longest continuous time in space by a woman which is 328 days.
Claudia Goldin
The first solo woman awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics. The prize was for her work on studying obstacles women face in obtaining equal pay.
Greta Gerwig
As the director of the Barbie film she is the first woman to create a film with the biggest debut ever for a film directed by a woman.
Beyonce
Beyonce became the most awarded artist at the Grammys in history in 2023 of any gender. She now has a total of 32 Grammy trophies in her collection.
Taylor Swift
Taylor was named TIME’s 2023 Person of the Year, meaning she is the first woman to appear twice on the Person of the Year cover.
Rachel Reeves
Rachel is set to become the UK’s first female chancellor if Labour win the UK general election expected some point this year.
The Lionesses & 2023 Women’s World Cup
Not only in 2022 did The Lionesses make history at Wembley bringing home the UEFA Women’s Euros trophy, in 2023 they continued to make history by reaching the Women’s World Cup final for the first time ever in Australia where they faced Spain. Ultimately Spain won but the talent and excitement has no doubt changed women’s football and sport in the UK and the World.
The World Cup reached record attendances in Australia and New Zealand and the matches included many historical moments including Spain winning.
2024
It is expected that 2024 will bring us more firsts for women breaking history, recently Raye won a recording breaking 6 awards at The Brits, making it most wins in one year overtaking Harry Styles, Adele, and Blur who all had previously won 4. In addition to Raye’s win, 70% of the winning acts at the Brits were either female or non-binary.
We’re excited to see what 2024 will continue to bring for women in all aspects of life.
