A New Government and New Employment Laws
We have woken up to a new government, Labour have won the election over the Conservative party and whilst the new Prime Minister himself has confirmed change will take time, what we do know is Labour have a “New Deal for Working People” meaning upcoming changes to our current employment laws.
Our article on 05 March 2024 outlined the new deal proposed by Labour. Whilst there are many changes anticipated from the Labour government and these are yet to be seen, what we can expect is:
• Unfair dismissal – a day 1 right.
• A ban on ‘one-sided’ flexibility including a ban zero hours contracts.
• A ban on fire and re-hire practices.
• The creation of a single status work.
• National Minimum Wage increases to a real living wage, scrapping age bands for those 18 and over.
• An implementation of bereavement leave for all types of bereavement.
Labour are also reporting to reform employment support to help people into work and with this are promising to expand childcare with 3,000 new primary school based nurseries and free breakfast clubs at every primary school in England, suggesting more access for working families to affordable childcare and therefore working opportunities.
Whether these changes come into effect in the next 100 days, or whether it takes months or even years, we will of course keep you updated on the implementation of these changes and the effects on businesses. If you have any queries regarding any of the points above and what they might mean for your business, or if you have a query on another area of employment law, our friendly and professional team are here to help.
