Celebrating International Women’s Day 2024 at BRM
To mark today’s International Women’s Day (Friday 8 March) Sarah Rowland, Executive Director, shares how BRM promotes equality and diversity across the firm and Director and Head of Employment Amy Hallam shares her female role models, and how she strives to inspire others to feel empowered in reaching their goals and aspirations.
Sarah said: “At BRM, we not only promote a positive and vibrant workplace culture, we promote equality for all of our colleagues – no matter their gender.
“I for one have seen a real shift in equality within the legal world over the last 10-15 years and I can see the male and female split across workforces becoming more and more even.
“I am proud to work alongside our female colleagues and I feel strong in saying that everyone at BRM is empowered in their legal careers. We foster fantastic working relationships at BRM and everyone is treated fairly across our workforce.
“This International Women’s Day I am proud to say that we are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where everyone can progress and thrive in their professions.”
Amy Hallam has shared her inspirations and her female role models as part of the firm’s celebration of International Women’s Day.
Who inspired you to work in the legal industry?
I loved watching legal programmes on TV, but it was a family friend who was a criminal solicitor and later became a Judge who inspired and encouraged me to go into Law.
He was a fabulous mentor and he thought that more women were needed in the legal profession.
Who is your female role model and why do they inspire you?
My mum is my female inspiration and role model.
My mum was a single parent working full time with three girls and she always encouraged us to not only push boundaries but to also be proud of who we were. She reminded us that there were no limits to what we could achieve.
She raised a lawyer, accountant and a lead medic who now lives in Australia but most importantly she has three happy daughters who have all achieved their goals. She now has grandchildren, including granddaughters, who are all encouraged and inspired in the same way.
How does BRM empower inclusion and equality for its female team members?
BRM has both strong female and male leaders all of whom encourage everyone to reach their goals and aspirations.
There are no limits to what can be achieved. We also encourage inclusion and inspiration by supporting local university and work experience students. We’re also active in the wider business community with our Ladies in Business Networking run in partnership with Prince Family Law.
How do you inspire others to feel included, a create a sense of belonging and empowerment?
Encouraging others to create and achieve their own goals and aspirations is important to not only make individuals feel empowered but to also inspire others to realise there is no limit to reaching their potential – no matter their background or sex.
This is something I feel very strongly about and that I try to bring into each working day in some way.
