Premises Licensing – Tips To Avoid a Licence Review

In the last few months, our licensing team has seen an influx of premises licence reviews and objections to variations and grants of new licences in Chesterfield. Both Chesterfield Police and the Borough Council are clamping down hard on the town’s licensed premises.

One accidental under age sale to a test purchaser or even a minor breach of the licence may be enough to find yourself in the unwelcome position of having your licence reviewed by the Licensing Committee.

Top tips to avoid the Committee:

Challenge 25 – even if this is not currently a condition on your licence request all staff to use this policy. If someone looks under 25, ID them.
Review your conditions – have you actually looked at your conditions recently? Ensure that you and your staff are strictly complying with your conditions, no matter how onerous they appear to be. It may be they relate to previous events held at the premises before you became the licence holder. Do they need varying to ensure they are relevant? We can help.
Speak with the police – before any proposed variation or temporary events notice (TEN) application, ensure you speak with the police and the council who will be able to express any concerns with you before you put in your application. This will avoid a costly objection.
