What To Do When Someone Dies

When someone dies, certain people and organisations need to be told and certain documents needs to be completed.

Some of this work can be done by a close relative or friend but some needs to be done by the executor or administrator of the estate.

What to do immediately after someone dies

It is important that in the first week after somebody dies the following action is taken:

Make sure that the family doctor is aware of the death
Contact us or any other solicitor who you believe may be holding a Will
Register the death at the Registry Office
Contact a funeral director to begin funeral arrangements (you will need to check the Will for any specific requests, which is why you need to obtain it as soon as possible)
If relevant, complete form BD8 and send it to the local Job Centre Plus or social security office (this form is given to you when you register the death)
If the person who has died was receiving any benefits or tax credits advise the offices that were making the payments.

If the deceased person did leave a Will, contact our Wills & Probate Team to discuss administration of the estate and obtaining probate.
